 | Need to spend an afternoon in Charleston South Carolna with the kids? -- take the kids to Waterfront Park. The refreshing Waterfront Park Charleston borders the entry to the Charleston Harbor. For centuries, this was a well trafficked wharf for centuries as it connects the City of Charleston with the Atlantic Ocean.
The waterfront suffered a decline in its beauty through the years. In May 1990, the newly renovated Waterfront Park opened to the public thanks to the vision and hard work of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Waterfront Park in Charleston serves as a free place to take the kids and just have fun whether you like to fish, walk, jump into a fountain or just bask in the sun while taking in all of the beautiful sights.
A wading fountain exists once you step off of the street, but if you walk further down the shoreline, you will find a world renowned landmark , called the Pineapple fountain, that was designed and built in 1990 to represent hospitality. Many new brides seek out the fountains in Waterfront Park as the backdrop to their cherished wedding pictures.
At the end of the 1250 foot long Mount Pleasent Pier, you will see the most spectacular views while sitting on the benches under the pavillion or fishing off the pier. Engineers constructed the Mount Pleasant Pier with the wood recycled from the pilings saved from the demolition of the Grace Memorial Bridge. Not only do families enjoy the beauty of this majestic pier, but the City rents the Pier out to weddings and other parties as well.

To one side of the Mount Pleasent Pier is the magnificent Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, a large suspension bridge carrying vehicle traffic over the Charleston Harbor. If you look to the another side of the pier, you will see the Patriots Point Naval Maritime Museum. Look out over the rolling waves for dolphin fins leaping about catching fish too, since the Charleston Harbor dumps into the Atlantic Ocean.
After you finish fishing and playing in the water, take a short walk towards the town and have a delicious treat, Gelato cone or dish. Gelato is the Italian version of ice cream. Unlike ice cream, gelato has less butterfat used to make it. A father and daughter team of chefs from Belgium, Hugo Heule and Joany Heule-Missotten , started their first successful Belgian Gelato shop right here in Charleston, South Carolina at the foot of the opening to Waterfront Park in the Spring of 2011. Their gelato treats are a work of art! |
