The past of this historic city stretches back to revolutionary times and also played a huge part in the Civil War of the 1850s. Many visitors share Charleston ghost stories related to the tragic death of slaves, Civil War soldiers, and even regular citizens. Dock Street Theater - The theater was originally constructed as a hotel by the Calder Family of Charleston in 1809, but was later converted to the Dock Street Theater. Two ghosts roam through the theater. First is a prostitute the locals call Nettie who died when struck by lightning from her porch. The second ghost in the Dock Street Theater is more notable as not only an actor, but the father of John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. His name is Junius Brutus Booth and died in 1852.

St. Phillips Graveyard - Sue Howard Harvey died a few days later after giving birth to a still born child. Many including a photographer documenting Charleston graveyards report seeing or photographing a woman crying over her baby's grave. Pregnant women or women who had miscarriages often feel sick when visiting the graveyard .
1837 Bed and Breakfast - Located on Wentworth Street, a slave boy haunts this bed and breakfast. In 1843, the boy's parents were sold. The slave boy ran and drowned while trying to swim to their boat in the harbor. The jovial ghost plays throughout the house by shaking a bed in one of the rooms, rocking the chairs, and runs away when he hears the crack of a whip.
Battery Carriage House - This Charleston hotel is the most popular haunted place in Charleston boasting a variety of ghosts. In room 8, a guest reports to have awoken in the middle of the night to find a headless torso dressed in a Confederate soldier uniform floating above his head. In room 10, the apparition called the Gentleman Ghost visit women and propositions them. When they decline he promptly leaves ... through a wall. The Gentlemen's Ghost is believed to have once been a Yale graduate that committed suicide by jumping off the hotel balcony.
Boone Hill Plantation - A popular landmark located in Mt. Pleasant boasts of being a working plantation dating back to the 1600s. Many people visit the plantation for its scary tour. Some have seen the ghost of a civil war soldier trying to remove a bullet from another soldier. |
